The Art of Portraiture

session 3

July 3, 2023 – July 14, 2023

A truly great portrait drawing is the consequence of deep understanding, confident design, and fine craftsmanship. Walking through the streets of Rome and its many excellent museums, you can see the results of generations of knowledge and effort poured into the art of portraiture.

In this workshop, you will learn about and practice, each stage of the process. Starting from the simplest exercises- you will progress through a series of projects designed to help you make a confident and artistic final portrait drawing. Here are just some of the topics we will address:

  • Paper stretching and preparation
  • How to work efficiently from a live model
  • Basic proportion and construction of the head
  • Graphite drawing techniques
  • Skeletal structure of the head
  • Muscular forms and fat deposits of the head
  • Compositional studies of great paintings + sculptures
  • Organization of shadow and light
  • Head structure templates, Loomis’ and my own

For 10+ years I have been teaching portraiture fundamentals to students from all over the world. I can confidently say that you can come into this course at any level, a total beginner or career expert, and come out with a deeper relationship and appreciation for portrait drawing.
