Painting Practices

session 3

JULY 5, 2027 – JULY 16, 2027

The workshop will focus on creating finished paintings by combining study from life for understanding and practice, followed by working from photographic reference to create more complex compositional solutions.

In this workshop, participants will begin by working from live models and studying the way light falls across forms as they perceive them in nature. After the first week of painting a variety of portraits from observation, the class will transition to working from photographs. Students will have the option of bringing their own photos to paint from or taking references together as a class and compositing them to create a final piece.

Along with painting we will be taking trips to museums and churches to study paintings, drawings and sculptures of the masters.
